A Language and Cultural Immersion Program for Students and Professionals in Gender and Women's Studies

Gender and Women´s Studies Spanish Program After five successful years offering specialized programs for social workers and medical professionals, the Central American Spanish Academy (ACCE) has designed this program focused on students and professionals in the area of Gender and Women’s Studies.

Program Objective

To give students and professionals in Gender and Women’s the opportunity to improve their Spanish language skills, enhance their cultural competency, and learn about the Women and Gender profession in Costa Rica.

Program Goals

  • To improve attendees’ Spanish skills (levels may range from low beginning through high advanced).
  • To enhance attendees’ cultural competency by offering lectures regarding the Latin culture.
  • To give attendees the opportunity to live with host families and to enhance cultural understanding.
  • To provide attendees with information about the Gender and Women’s Studies profession in Central and Latin America.
  • To give attendees the opportunity to experience Gender and Women’s by scheduling visits with local agencies.

Program Format

This program is scheduled for a two-week period with specific days and times for curriculum related activities. This two-week program will provide a total of 40 hours of language classes and 16 hours of cultural classes and activities. Each class has a maximum of four students and the emphasis is on conversational skills.

Schedule

 

First Saturday: arrival day
First Sunday Evening: Placement test and orientation
First Monday: Orientation and classes begin
Monday – Friday: Language classes 20 hours per week
Tuesday & Thursday: Cultural classes and activities (8hours per week)
Final Friday evening: Closing celebration
Final Saturday: Departure day

   

Program Curriculum

Lecture Topics

(a) Costa Rica: An overview of the country and culture
(b) Women’s Studies in Costa Rica: What, who, how, and where
(c) Women’s Studies in Central and Latin America

Guest Speakers

Speakers will include local gender and women’s studies professionals and professors.

Planned Visits

Visits will be made to women’s organization located within an hour drive from the school.

August: Saturday, August 04th (arrival day) – Saturday, August 18th (departure day)

 

Program Fees for 2012 sessions:

  • Program/Host family $1,175.00 – This option is highly suggested for program attendees.  
  • Program/Campus villas $1,175.00 *

*Staying in a villa does not include dinner

Register for additional weeks of language classes either before or after this program and receive a 10% discount on extra fees.
